UKAEA Addresses Fusion Energy Challenges Using Ansys Simulation

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), a global leader in fusion R&D, aims to make fusion energy commercially viable through its Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) project. Since full-scale reactor testing is not possible before construction, UKAEA relies on Ansys high-fidelity simulations to model complex multiphysics interactions:

  • Ansys Maxwell: models electromagnetic fields and their effect on structural stability
  • Ansys Mechanical: evaluates thermal and mechanical stresses on reactor components and materials
  • Ansys Fluent: models the complex behaviour of coolant systems within the reactor
  • Ansys optiSLang: integrates all simulation workflows for process and design optimization

UKAEA also collaborates with industry partners to validate these tools in fusion-relevant scenarios, advancing the path toward safe, carbon-free fusion energy.
