Bengaluru-based space-tech startup GalaxEye has secured a US patent for the core technology behind its OptoSAR imaging system, becoming the first Indian startup to receive a US patent for satellite imaging technology. The same foundational technology is already patented in India.
OptoSAR combines two sensors on one satellite: an optical sensor for regular images, and a microwave-based SAR sensor that can see through clouds and darkness. Normally these operate separately and are merged afterward, which can cause mismatches. OptoSAR instead synchronises both sensors to capture the same location at the same time, so the data is aligned from the start. GalaxEye said the technology aims to support defence, government and commercial use, including agriculture, infrastructure, insurance and disaster management.
