Dassault Systèmes: Breathing New Life into Lung Research with Simulation

Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, in collaboration with Dassault Systèmes, presented a simulation framework to study how lungs behave under realistic breathing conditions using SIMULIA Abaqus. The team combined a physical breathing apparatus with computational models to replicate breathing mechanics. Experimental data was used to define lung tissue behavior, enabling the simulation to capture deformation and airflow patterns that are difficult to measure directly.

The study examines how localized changes such as airway obstruction, regional stiffening, or surgical removal of lung tissue affect overall respiratory performance. It also evaluates mechanical ventilation scenarios to analyze how applied pressures translate into internal stress distribution, which is relevant for assessing potential injury mechanisms. This integrated experimental–simulation approach aims to enable scenario-based analysis and supports research into respiratory conditions and treatment strategies.
