CATIA IDX Blends Parametric Modeling and Sculpting

Dassault Systèmes has shared how CATIA ICEM Design Experience (IDX) lets motorsport and automotive engineers build surfaces by mixing parametric modeling, which follows a structured series of steps, with surface sculpting, which shapes the surface directly.

Daniel Vass, founder of Origin Engineering, notes that in Generative Shape Design (GSD) the software mostly decides the underlying surface mathematics, while IDX gives engineers control over it. He says a twisted, curved side surface needed fewer construction elements and surface spans in IDX. Cleaner surfaces aim to provide a useful starting point for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) meshing, composite lay-up design, surface offsetting and production, which may reduce rework later.
