AVL Simulation Shows Oil Film Can Ease Motor Rotor Vibration

As electric motor speeds increase, rotor mass imbalance generates forces that split vibration into forward and backward whirling patterns, a gyroscopic effect that stresses support bearings. This is further worsened by magnetic pull from rotor eccentricity, which adds to radial bending.

To study a solution, AVL used its EXCITE™ M tool with the E-Motor Tool for electromagnetic forces, modeling a floating bearing design where a lubricating oil film sits between the bearing’s outer ring and housing. The coupled structural-fluid simulation showed this oil film damps radial motion, reducing bearing loads and displacement while improving alignment and reliability.
