AVL Combines 1D System Simulation With 3D CFD

AVL has detailed a co-simulation approach for analyzing gas flow in internal combustion engines by combining system-level and component-level simulation. It links AVL CRUISE™ M, a 1D system simulation tool, with AVL FIRE™ M for 3D CFD analysis. Managed according to the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) standard, the approach places a 3D-modeled gas-path section, such as an intake manifold, within a broader system model.

Demonstrated on a four-cylinder compression-ignited engine, it aims to capture cylinder-to-cylinder differences in exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and combustion air ratio, while limiting the time the CFD simulation remains active. In simple terms, it connects whole-engine behavior with detailed gas-flow analysis inside critical components.
